A nervous system disease that weakens muscles and impacts physical function. In this disease, nerve cells break down, which reduces functionality in the muscles they supply.
The cause is unknown. The main symptom is muscle weakness. Medication and therapy can slow ALS and reduce discomfort, but there's no cure.
Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed and passes from ALS
90% of cases occur without a family history
Onset is usually between the ages 40 & 70 years
Life expectancy is 2 to 4 years
By 2040 ALS incidence is predicted to increase worldwide by 70%
Twitching and cramping of muscles
Loss of motor control in the hands and arms
Tripping and falling
Dropping things
Persistent fatigue
Slurred or thick speech
Trouble breathing
Trouble swallowing
Paralysis.
